Whenever you go to church during the days for Misa de Gallo (Simbang Gabi), it is always presumed by anyone who sees you that you will be there to hear mass as a religious person. But sometimes this presumption is not true to all as there are many people mostly teens do so not really for religious but personal purpose - to be with their boyfriends or girlfriends or friends.
As you enter the vicinity of the church you will wonder why there are youngsters outside the church usually sitting or standing in pairs or in groups on the church sides obviously far from hearing the priest's sermon. They apparently don't listen to the mass going on but rather busy chatting with eachother sometimes noisily. Meanwhile, the side and dark portion of the church seem to be the favorite of young lovers.
Simbang Gabi is a religious activity intended to those who want to
observe the nine-day novena which starts on December 16 up to Christmas
Eve. Unfortunately, this become an opportunity for young lovers and
group of friends to relax, enjoy, and socialize with each other which
are not the intentions why such activity was created. But everyone of us
has freedom to socialize and as long as we don't violate some laws,
attending early masses is surely not prohibited whether you really want
to hear the mass or not.
